Most of the time I love Apple, their OS has found its mark, the consumer and pro software is making noise and can do incredible things. Their hardware??? up until today... I wasn't so pleased, but I could over look it.

There used to be a time when I would stay up all night before the macworlds sifting through the apple site for "prereleases" of information. Now I've come to realize that there are more important things in life. Sure the toys are cool but do I hafta be one of the first to know?

Okay maybe, in a small sence I do... I kept a chat window open as a macrumors reporter sent out small tidbits of info on the new developments. I even watched the Steve Jobs Keynote later last night so I could actually see the software and devices I had read about.

They have a way of making you love them, and just when you think the honeymoon's over they do just that little thing you've been hoping for. Believe it or not, this is one of the things that makes me hate them.

Apple is a tease. sure they make great product, but only so great... not over the top "OMG! Im dying of orgasm" great but "you can look, but dont touch" great. they have become that tease of a first girlfriend you had in middle school. People will rush out to stores to buy it and find that its lacking that one key component that would put it over the top.

They almost NEVER take that last step. its so disappointing at times. and yeah I feel that way with iLife '06. once I actually have a copy in hand I'll review each app and give it a proper review. until then, I'll say this. I like the suite, (otherwise, I wouldn't buy it.... right?) but from what I've seen and read... its missing some key elements that could have made it... insanely great!

Yeah, my Blogs have been sporatic the last several months.
Work, promotions, family, and many other aspects of life have drained me of any ideas to write about.

But that will be changing here in the very near future. And speaking of changes, I have a new blog coming soon! I won't revel the URL just yet but stay tuned as I'll soon be laying that on ya!

I'm still trying to figure out how the separate the two properly. Thinking on that a bit.... will experiment with a few Ideas I have floating around in tho old noggin. But you'll be hearing from your hubble narrator soon enough!

Skepticality on hiatus

This morning as I was starting my work day I heard the news. Derek Colanduno of Skepticality has suffered an injury that is life threatening, the show has been put on hiatus. Needless to say my thoughts are with Derek, his family and His co-host, Swoopy who gathered enough stength to deliver the news personally.

It's my personal hope that Derek has a speedy recovery. Their show is a breath of fresh air in a world that is bogged down with opinion, they strove to deliver fact. Until then, I'll catch up on the past episodes I've been meaning to catch up on.

iTunes 5 came out today and it's more like a point release that a full-fledged version upgrade. I'm thinking this will be the way of things to come with iTunes. Lots of small tweaks in features rather that large monumental leaps we used to see.

Remember the excitement of going from version 2 to 3 and then 3 to 4! Dont get me wrong... I love iTunes, its the primary way I listen to music and podcasts. But this version release is a little disappointing.

One feature that SHOULD have been in this release... The one I've emailed apple for as soon as 4.9 came out??? The ability to individually set podcasts... Lets face it... I listen to podcasts like Earthcore, which I want to hang on to and then some are dailies that I listen to and dump right afterward.

Apple iTunes Development crew??? Hear my cries! This is a much needed feature for iTunes 5.1.

One of the things that attract me to Linux and the open source environment is the "pioneering" spirit many of the users tend to have. The "lets see what happens if I try to do this..." attitude.

Its not always practical, its not always fruitful... but it doesn't have to be. Sometimes its just plain fun to try and see what happens, just because you can. Here we find a guy who wanted to see how many remote logins he attempt at one time. Below are his results.

Religion is a rather sticky subject and in almost all cases. I do not like to discuss my beliefs with anyone... All too often its a matter of "lets agree to disagree, and let sleeping dogs lie." But I found this quiz and felt the need to take it. It actually hit pretty well on the Agnostic portion.

Okay that said... this closes the book on my mentioning religion in the future and my willingness to debate my beliefs.

Today people climbed over each other to get their hands on 4 year old iBooks recently decommissioned by Hermitage High School, near Richmond, VA. Richmond International Raceway became the site for people acting crazy in the hopes to get a good deal.

This years students will be recieving brand new Dell Laptops! I'll keep my eyes open in four years to see if they cause the same type of distrubance when they sell for $50!

Can it a bug, call it what you will but there is a trick to finding a hidden little secret for what appears to be a feature to come...
For those of you with iTunes 4.9 and a Mac (of course) go into you display settings and drop the color depth to 256 colors.... Yeah I know its ugly... but then open up iTunes and go into the preferences... and check out that podcast icon now! Yup, it becomes an icon the strangely resembles a Cellphone.... Hmmmmm very interesting indeed!

Sometime next year Microsoft will be releasing Windows Vista. (formerly known as Longhorn)

I'm sure there are a number of PC users that either getting impatient or aggravated that:
Microsoft keeps pushing back the release date on their latest OS Offering.
They have had to trim back some of the "promised" features of said OS.
That you'll probably end up paying through the nose to obtain a copy. (Free downloads using P2P doesn't count, besides thats illegal!)
There are free alternatives! Linux is truly coming into its own now and there are many distributions to choose from... So many choices, which one to choose???

If you are a rank amateur or if you know your way around a command line there is now one distro that actually can accommodate both now, Ubuntu! Its really worth a look over! It comes with OpenOffice the free counterpart to Microsoft office plus many other apps to keep you occupied for a good month or so!

I've decided to stick to one OS on my PC and Ubuntu will be that OS! So over the next six months (at least) I'll be reporting on the applications, fixes and any questions You may have on Ubuntu! I'm thinking it might even be best to dedicate an entire Blog to the cause. I'm hoping that you'll come visit and join this Ubuntu community!

Amanda Congdon, the gal from RocketBoom that every drooling fanboy loves to see on a daily basis. Has truely become the sweetheart of the Internet. I've watched RocketBoom off and on for the last six months. Its pretty creative and has plenty of humor. I'm actually rather impressed with their unconventional use of webcams, calling to the locations and interviewing someone they see.

I like to watch every once and a while but I've come to the conclusion I can't watch it every single day. She's witty and easy on the eyes, but the humor sometimes grates at me if I watch it too much. So two or three times a week is about all I can take and remain unirritated.

But that shouldn't stop you from checking it out. Its actually quite good and can be very inventive at times. Go check them out! If nothing else you can become another drooling fanboy!

Okay I finally got through the iKitchen tutorial. Needless to say I think the whole planning / engineering of the project is overboard in some areas, and not enough in others.
Things I would have considered doing...

mount the screen on the wall (to save counter space)

consider mounting the mini somewhere the CD/DVD drive would have been accessable (and NOT a place it was susceptible to kitchen dirt, debris and SPILLS!). Make a mounting bracket under one of the top counters perhaps?

his ideas for cable management were okay, some I still dont understand (why oh why would you pull the Power LED and powerbutton is beyond me. Yes I realize he stuffed the unit under the counters, but (as mentioned in #2) I wouldn't have considered that for a possible area for placement... too much that could go wrong if you ask me.

IMHO: Nice idea, questionable implementation.

Don't get me wrong, I think the idea is great! and I'm sure he had his reasons to make the decisions he did. My situation is a bit different so I would, of course, go about doing things differently.

But its cool to see the process and notes of his thinking behind it all.

when I get a kitchen of my very own, I imagine I'll do something similar. [GRIN]

I'm used to Apple being a shameless self promoter. Most of the time I don't mind. But recently they have been tooting their own horn about Team Banzai. The fact is... Yes, the project is very impressive. they loaded up a VW Touareg (named Dora) with computers running Mac OS X (no, so far I haven't found which version, assuming its Tiger), and have make it completely automated. In other words, the car drives itself! Yeah, like I said, its an impressive feat!

The problem I have is I've recieved countless emails from apple (I'm on many of their newsletter lists) about it. From their developer to quicktime, all it seems have featured Team Banzai this week. Its getting a bit old and I feel Like I'm being beaten over the head with it.

Hey Apple, find something new to write about huh? How about writing about that handsome young man who graces your education site? Yeah, the one in the light blue shirt, up front. he seems like a fairly interesting fellow! [Grin]

After reviewing the footage of material that came off the Space shuttle during its launch. The shuttle fleet has been indefinitely grounded. This is bad news, and now I begin to wonder if I'll ever get to see a shuttle launch.

Lets see what the coming months will bring.

NASA Held a Preliminary Report on the new measures put in place for debris assessment at 5:30pm EDT today.
The initial report does show that there were a few "debris events" during launch. I think we can all agree that all launches would have a couple. But this launch actually has one of the funniest. As the launch began, before the shuttle even cleared the launch tower the large orange tank, know as the External Tank (ET), struck a bird in flight. No harm came to the orbiter from this event. much 2 the amusement (or dismay) of many of my friends & family, I'm an admitted teen of the 80's & Prince Junkie! I LOVE his funky sound! Let's face it... U have 2 have some respect 4 some1 who has mastered over 20 instruments!

Its been a while since I spent sometime with the "Purple 1" and it might just show, I've been 2 grumpy with most aspects of life lately. So I cracked open my collection today. (Including the Coverville podcast dedicated 2 his songs, GREAT show by the way, Thanks Brian!!!)

Needless 2 say, I can't help but B happy and upbeat after listening 2 songs like "Kiss", "Erotic City" & "The Beautiful 1s"

SciFi Friday: Afterthoughts

Okay...
I finally got to see SciFi Friday... Thankfully my Roomie was good enough to record it for me last night while I was out!

My thoughts in a word... WOW!

SG-1:
It was good to see Ben Brower (Lt Col. Cameron Mitchell) take the lead for the SG-1 team. Lots of backstory for this new character! It was also good to see Claudia Black (Vala). (For those scifi freaks out there, you'll remember that Ben & Claudia co-stared in their own series, Farscape. Great to see them working together again!) The season premier was the first in a two parter... the beginning of Ben's custodial duties as the lead for SG-1 was good, but I'll have to get back to you on that next week when the second part concludes.

Rick's Rating: 4 Stars

SG: Atlantis:
This was the one I've been waiting the last four months for.... We see the what happens to the Atlantis crew... And questions get answered. Will Sheppard sacrifice himself to distroy a Hive ship? Are Ford & Teyla killed by overpowering Wraith forces? What about the last remaining Hive ship? and, of course, Where the Hell is The Daedalus, the second earth ship being sent to back up the efforts of Atlantis? These get answered and new twists emerge!

Rick's Rating: a perfect 5 Stars!!!

Battlestar Galactica:
The darker, grittier update to the late seventies SF series BSG was left on a cliffhanger! Commander Adama was shot. Starbuck disobeys orders to find an ancient relic back on Cylon controlled Caprica and the fate of the scout ship that crash lands on Kobol! Are any of these resolved in the season opener? Nope not one, but its a great story and will most likely keep you in your seat wanting more next week!

Rick's Rating: 4.5 stars!

A great way to start off the season for all three shows!

But it gets better!
Next week, we see the SciFi channel premier of FireFly! This prematurely cancelled show will start the friday lineup and will no doubt create more fans for the release of Serenity, the FireFly movie due out this fall!

Until then, buckle your seatbeats this season of SciFi Friday looks to be a great one!

What a damn shame!
I did this... Geez, over a year ago as a bit of friendly competition with a friend of mine... He won.
But I remembered it today and wanted to see were I stood. Nothing very surprising, might experiment with it and change out the pic and see what happens.

For those who might be concered if I'm hurt by this... fear not! Remember, I'm the geeky smart kid, thats way better than being "Beautiful"! Besides I have bigger fish to fry than to entertain bored, insecure, 'net surfers, looking for a date!

This is it Folks!
Tonight we find out how Ben Browder & Claudia Black do on SG-1, See what the crew of Atlantis do to fight off the Wraith & Learn how gracefully Adama takes a bullet to the gut!

For SciFi folks its been Months of waiting... The waiting has ended!

Personally I think Ben will do a fine job on SG-1, its a shame that Claudia's Character, Vala, will be more of a cameo appearance. As a fan of Farscape, I loved both characters. We've seen Vala in action as a Con artist with an affinity for S&M. It's one of my favorite episodes of SG-1's season 8.

Next up: Atlantis, My new favorite SF show. I personally love all the cast of characters and the season finale was a HUGE cliffhanger! Sure... we all know that they'll win... but at what cost? Remember, They lost Peter in the season finale and the writing crew promised more suprises!

Finally, BSG
Starbucks on Caprica, Boltar and Six Stranded, Boomer's a Cylon, The President is under arrest and Adama's been shot! I can't think of anything to add to that.

Grab the beer, pass the popcorn and settle in for the season premiers!

Earthships have been around for a while now. Environmentally friendly, and self-sustaining homes have come a long way since their "hippy" roots. Solar, Geothermal & Water reclamation technologies have improved considerably since the first versions.

I've been thinking about looking into one... theres only one real drawback I can see. Bandwidth.... I need it and areas that could accomidate an earthship aren't generally cable internet accessable. Will have to look into alternatives unless something truly revoltionary comes down the pipe!

I'll keep you updated on my findings and you'll be sure to hear any progress I make on actually making my earthship dream a reality!

I'm actually ashamed I haven't shared this with friends and my "audience" before now.

Escape pod is a podcast. (I'm sure most of you have heard of them by now... if not refer to This link about Podcasting) Escape pod is a show that specializes in short SF stories (typically 3-45 mins) Thy are great for your daily commute and take on the feel of the short stories found in the pulp SF magazines of days past.

If you a fan of the genre, this one comes HIGHLY Recommended! They accept submissions, if you are a writer (I'm not much of one, but I've been writing a few in hopes they'll accept one) and they also accept donations... (they do pay their writers for their work)

But don't take my word for it... Go check out their site site. My current favorites are In His Footsteps & Snow Day. but all are worth a listen.

Yep, I've heard about it over the last few months or so, But I've only just seen the preview for the film. It looks HOT! The Jury will still be out until I see the film (Due out April 2006), but from the preview it looks to be one of the closer interpretations of any PDK (Thats Philip K Dick, for you non SF readers) Book to date.

This brings up the SERIOUS need to dig around in my bookcase and re-read the book! But until then...

So I'm collecting all sorts of Hockey related media in its place. Hopefully that will quell some of this need for slapshots to the five hole and hockey fights. First on this list is a fine ad from the molsen folks. Its funny as hell and a MUST see for any hockey fan. So the non-hockey savvy this may not appear to have anything to do with the sport. But trust me, I've you wondering why your Hockey buddies are laughing their asses off to this commercial... have them explain after they stop rolling on the floor!

Today I spoke with a friend who asked me to come fix a few things on his website. He's a good guy and always makes sure I'm well compensated for my time.

It's usually cash or even a nice dinner somewhere. For me thats prefectly alright! Today was a bit different. Today He wanted to take me to a strip club. First and foremost... it was a very generious offer! But I had to decline. Back in the day, I would have jumped at the chance. These days its a bit different.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy seeing naked young ladies as much as the next guy. But five years of NO female companionship has a tendancy to get to you. The life of a geek I suppose.

Maybe because I'm getting older, maybe its because the last few experiences made me feel like a leach. most likely a combination of the two.

Needless to say, The deal was for dinner again. I'm more than happy with the arrangement. I'm thinking a good steak!

Hearing news of the London Bombings that happened while I slept. The news saddens me on a day that should be a rather happy one. Today also marks the anniversary of my families arrival to the United States, 28 years ago today! I was seven at the time.

If theres one thing I've learned from using Flickr is that sifting through other peoples images can be a great way to blow off some stream.

The woman in the picture goes by the username of selkie and she has become one of my favorites to check on a regular basis... I would imagine from the comments she gets, she's probably one of the more popular accounts on the system.

She's an artist from New Mexico and regularly posts nude self portraits to her account. (yeah, okay I've said it before... Im a sucker for nudes.) She definitely has gained herself a following and even has a song written about her. I highly recommend anyone to go check out her gallery of images... there are some truly powerful ones in her collection!

I'll keep commenting and learning from her (She really does have a tremendous eye for photography) She's become my unofficial muse to return to taking great pictures again and not just goof off with it.

Well thats about all I have to say for now.
Oh one more thing...

The last several days I feel much like the picture.
Its been NON-Stop! I didn't even really get a relaxing weekend and thats probably why I feel so crappy this week. I'm hoping it more just the transition back into the semester thats making me feel a bit off lately.

Its my hope that my brain will find some return to normalcy sometime in the near future... I could really use it about now. I will have to say that this blog has helped. I can get things off my chest have a semi good time doing it...

I realize my readers probably have no fucking clue what I'm talking about half the time... S'ok, just go with it! I'll try to make better sense when I'm not so twisted and mangled in my thought processes.

Today was a major release day for Apple.
They released the Mac mini, iLife '05 & iWork... which we all went out a got at least one thing. in the case of my Buddy Dave here... He got a new iPod Shuffle and then promptly ate it, dispite the warning!

Funnily enough, Apple removed that warning from the shuffle site... So I guess its okay to eat them now! Bon Appetite!

Okay All!
My first official "blog-signment" is coming up in a little over five and a half hours from now! I'll be reporting all the happenings from the release of three new Apple offerings. The latest update to iLife ('05), iWork '05 and the Mac mini. In addition to that, its possible that I might catch my first glimpse of the heavily coveted iPod Shuffle. I'm expecting a MAD House type atmosphere similar to the one I experienced during the Jaguar Release...

I'll put it this way, I didn't even make it through the door! The line for that event stretched all the way around the mall. It was NUTS! But my crew is determained, we've planed to show up a whole TWO hours before the Apple Store even opens. Admittedly, this is more than I'm willing to normally deal with but what the hell... I might just have some fun and it gets me out of the apartment for several hours.

I'll be armed with my Camera, iPod Photo, Cell phone (for those long overdue audioblogs), Nicorette & a few bucks to pick up one of the new pickings. I'll report all the goings on in the store and figure I might find some kid that's spent too much time in Mom's basement, awaiting the new arrivals! If I find a cooperative one, I'll try for an interview. Pictures will be served up as soon as I can upload them and who knows I might make these blog-signments my weekly addition. We'll see how this one goes.

So expect from the Weird to Demented as we go out and raise a little hell at the Aspen Grove Apple Store! This should be a little bit of fun on a whim.

I'm a complete sucker for GREAT Nudes! My favorites are generally much like he ones pictured here. When the camera shows almost as much skin as possible without actually showing anything considered "Taboo", more specifically nipples or genitalia. To me, its much more provocative than say, a woman spread eagle for all the world to see.

You may not like it or think of it as pornography. I think of it as lines and textures that naturally are appealing because of who we are... we can be drawn to it because its viewed as sexy, nurturing or simply a thing of beauty. Afterall, thats what a human body really is.... Right?

Well, iHome caused much debate the day before the Steve Jobs Keynote and many thought that the iHome Media Certne was a hoax. As it turns out the iHome is a real Apple project and the only reason it was not announced at the keynote was because Steve ran out of time. Apple plans to reschedule the iHome announcement for sometime after the 22nd...

As you can see in the sidebar of my blogger page I've begun to use flickr. it allows me to upload pics and use them on my site in addition to browsing and using other folks pics.

its pretty interesting to see what others have done uploaded. I particularly enjoy sifting through the nudes... beyond the obvious reasons. I find some really interesting shots like this one. I Love these kinds of nude shots. For as familiar as we are with the shape of our bodies, can you identify what part of the body this shot came from? Sure could be the Legs (most likely answer) but it could be the arms held together (or somewhere else equally recognizable). The main point is the idea of being mislead.

Smokeless & Sleepless thoughts!

I'm angry about lots of things right now. Most of which circle around smoking. I quit on Dec 31 @ 10pm and I've been an asshole since!

So here are a few reasons I'm pissed:

1) I Want one, I cant have one. (this ones simple for all folks who presently, or in the past have smoked.)

2) All you Non-smokers that thinking is soooo fucking easy to quit. (My response??? Fuck you, self-righteous bastards!) By the way, this does not include my non-smoking friends that have been supportive. They should know by seeing me its not easy!

3) This next one burns me to no end, All those assholes that used to piss me off because they would complain about cigarette smoke? It didn't matter where I was, mostly outside where I could legally smoke. They would still complain.... Pussies! Yeah well heres the kicker, I might end up like those jerks. Just so I can steer clear of cigarettes... Wonderful, turn in to my worst fucking nightmare!

4) Oh, Lets not forget the reason I'm writing this now.... Oh yeah! I can't Fucking sleep!

So just so you know, I'm fine, really! just needed to vent my frustrations. Dont worry... Im not giving up the attempt to quit. I'm three days along now and I'll be damned it I screw up now! but just wanted to let folks know... Im really annoyed right now.

Thats the purpose of having a blog... Right?
Gimme a couple weeks and I'm sure my mood will change! Just dont push it right now!

So in the spirit of those mood monitors, here goes:
